After School Program Fest Press Release



Youth Ready Chicago Community Council Region 5 presents After school Program Fest 2011; a free event for the community to showcase and increase the enrollment of youth in after school programs across the region. The community is invited out on Saturday October 1, 2011, to the John L. Yancey Boys & Girls Club, located at 6245 S. Wabash Ave Chicago IL, 60637, from 1pm to 4pm for a day filled with entertainment, fun, and giveaways.  Buses will transport people to and from the event leaving from The Center of Change located at 63rd and California  and St. Sabina Church located at 7909 S. Racine  60620.  CPS Students of all ages and their families are encouraged to  attend.  

Some of the day's activities will include:

A Mobile Tech Lab

Free Shaved Ice, Popcorn, and Food Demos by Local Chefs

Free Dental Screenings for youth

A Mobile Rapid HIV Testing Van

Free Hair Cuts from a local Barber

Music Courtesy of DJ Dragon 

Performances by the University of Hip Hop Dancers 

Giveaways and More!


Entertainment  will also feature performances by Youth Ready Chicago Community Council Region 5 (YRCCC R5) after school programs and My After School Program is my Anti Violence Contest winners. There will be local youth service providers sharing information, resources, and opportunities for youth to enroll in after school programming.

Our theme this year is, "My After School Program Is My Anti Violence". The day will culminate with awarding of prizes for the winners of the My After School Program is my Anti Violence Contest. First Prize is an Ipod!  Youth must answer questions about how participation  After school programs has had a positive impact on their lives in the form of a poem, rap, essay, or visual art piece. If you choose a visual art piece please include a brief summary on how your piece answers the questions. Only 2 entries per program and group entries of no more than 2 youth. Submit entries forms online and turn in materials by Tuesday Sept 27th to Xavier Davis Southwest Youth Collaborative  6400 S. Kedzie Chicago. Winners will be announced at YRCCC Region 5 After School Program Fest Saturday October 1, 2011,  The Top 3 Entries will be contacted early and invited to perform at  the ASP Fest.  

To reserve a seat on a bus email your name, phone number, and the site you wish to get on the bus to yrcregion5communitycouncil@gmail.com or leave the info in a phone message at 773-476-3534 ext 245. Buses will leave 12:30pm and return no later than 6pm. Seating is limited so hurry!

Recent studies have found that youth, who do not participate in after school programs are nearly three times more likely to skip classes, use drugs, drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes and or engage in sexual activity.  Join us as we celebrate after school programming and  increase positives avenues for youth during out of school hours.

Youth Ready Chicago Community Council is an initiative that engages community members, youth-serving organizations, and the City Department of Family and Support Services in developing a coordinated regional and citywide network of programs, services, and resources available to youth during out of school time throughout Chicago.

The Southwest Youth Collaborative is the lead coordinating organization for Region 5 and our regional boundaries include: Harlem Avenue to the west, Lake Michigan to the east, 83rd Street to the south, and 55th Street to the northern boundary of the city.  Each year SWYC works with 2000 low-income youth and their families to provide educational enhancement, workforce development, life skills and leadership development, violence prevention, multicultural arts, and sports and recreation activities.

ASP FEST Vendor's form-Complete this form by Sept 23rd if you would like to have a table at the event to share info, resources, and publicize your programs at ASP Fest. We have space for over 40 Vendors but tables are limited so please bring your own if possible.
