Transforming Our City into the Most Physically Active in the Country

You are invited to imagine a Chicago where physical activity is a natural part of daily life for every person in every neighborhood.

Join us on Tuesday, July 19, at the UIC Forum to begin to make this vision real in our communities:

· Learn about tools, programs, and policies that work.

· Meet experts and organizations that are committed to this vision.

· Explore ways to remove barriers to physical activity in our city, especially in communities with few resources or fear of crime.

· Propose next steps for a blueprint to transform our neighborhoods.

· Build and expand partnerships committed to this new, healthier Chicago.

Let’s make this vision a reality together.

Englewood Summer Gardening Program Is Hiring

FYI

Openlands just found out that we will have funding from the state to run a Youth Conservation Corps program again this summer!! We are looking for someone in the community who must have a background in teaching and/or working with high school students and has experience or training in gardening and horticulture. The program has to start June 27th with students, so please send me a resume by tomorrow at 10am if you are interested.

General Program Information:

This summer program will last 6 weeks starting June 27th and will run through August 5th. It will support school or community greening projects when schools are not in session (NOW!) and expose youth to employment opportunities in the greening industry. It is important that students work at their own school or home communities to make a positive impact that they will see on a regular basis. Openlands has been running summer youth employment programs for 12 years, incorporating current best practices and lessons learned.

Program Objectives

· provide summer jobs for Chicago youth in safe situations close to the students’ homes or at their school

· support outdoor learning landscapes at schools or provide skilled physical assistance to the adult managers of each neighborhood’s community gardens;

· increase students’ awareness of their own community and their desire to improve it

· promote positive inter-generational communication and respect;

· teach job readiness, team work, and good work and study habits;

· provide youth with a learning experience that broadens their horizons and opens their eyes to new possibilities for future schooling, careers and interests;

· youth will learn more about the natural environment all around them

Job Description – general:

  • One Crew Leader will be hired to manage 10 students in community gardens or 15 students in a school site, 30 hours per week average
  • Crew Leader will have to recruit, interview and hire students.
  • 20 hours per week for youth because of summer heat and physical work
  • Crew Leader training before program starts

About the program

Where & When
Date: Saturday June 18th
Time: 2pm
Location: DuSable Museum of African American History
740 E. 56th Place

Timuel D. Black is known as Chicago's griot. He has spent his lifetime gathering the stories of Chicago's African-American community, documenting the great social movements, and working for peace and justice. Born in Alabama in 1918, Black came to Chicago's South Side with his family as part of Chicago's first wave of the Great Migration--when tens of thousands of African-Americans left the South. After serving with distinction in World War II, Black attended Roosevelt University and the University of Chicago. A teacher, social scientist and historian, Black played a leading role in the civil rights movement in Chicago and nationally, working closely with Dr. King. He is the author of countless articles and of Bridges of Memory, the oral history collection documenting the lives of African-Americans who came to Chicago in the first and second waves of the Great Migration. Mr. Black is currently at work on his own memoir.

Reginald R. Robinson, born and raised in Chicago is a noted pianist/composer and an educator on ragtime music across the U.S. Reginald became interested in playing Ragtime while in 7th grade after a city funded arts program visited the school. The program was led by Jazz trumpeter Orbert Davis and covered many different styles from Beethoven to Miles Davis but Reginald paid close attention when the musicians talked about Ragtime and performed "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin. He had heard this melody coming from the ice cream trucks every summer but had never heard the song played as a serious piece of music on piano before. For Christmas that year his mother bought him a small electronic keyboard in which he began to teach himself how to play. In 2004, Reginald received "the genius" fellowship Grant from the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for his innovation in Ragtime music !

Timuel Black's talk will be followed by a solo piano recital by Reginald Robinson. Writer Sharon Warner will read Gardeners of Dreams to open the program.

Special guest : Sharon F. Warner is a writer of diverse interests and experience. Her work has been published in 3 countries, and of course, online. She has been part of the Neighborhood Writing Alliance since 1997, and her work has appeared in the Journal of Ordinary Thought since that time. "Gardeners of Dreams" was inspired by remarks made by Timuel Black at an Edible Activism workshop at the Artistic Garden in Hyde Park.
